Under statutory and licence obligations, EirGrid is required to prepare a transmission network development plan covering a ten-year period. In line with S.I. No. 227/2022, as amended, the plan is now published every two years and provides a comprehensive overview of the future development of Ireland's electricity transmission network.

The Draft Transmission Development Plan 2026-2035 outlines the transmission projects and contracted customer connections that EirGrid plans to progress over the next decade. The plan plays an important role in demonstrating how the electricity transmission system will be reinforced, upgraded and expanded to support the secure operation of the power system while enabling the delivery of national energy and climate objectives.

The TDP also provides stakeholders with greater insight into how EirGrid plans and develops the transmission network, setting out the key drivers influencing future investment decisions and network development.

The draft plan is structured around a number of key themes, including:

- System needs and key drivers - explaining how future transmission network requirements are identified and assessed.

- Stakeholder engagement - outlining EirGrid's approach to engaging with stakeholders and incorporating feedback into network planning.

- Offshore development - detailing the phased approach to developing Ireland's offshore electricity grid infrastructure.

Project delivery - presenting significant transmission investments planned between 2026 and 2035, organised by region and project type.

The consultation provides an opportunity for stakeholders to review the draft plan and provide feedback on the proposed approach to developing Ireland's transmission network over the coming decade.

Submissions received as part of the consultation will help inform the CRU's review of the Draft Transmission Development Plan before it is finalised.
